- Andrea, did you REALLY get all your babies out of diapers by the time they were walking?Yep, I sure did. My children stopped using daytime diapers at 9.5 mos, 13 mos, 15 mos, 12 mos, 12 mos, and 14 mos.
They varied in nighttime dryness (regardless of wearing diapers at night or not) and were dry at night by 26 mos, 26 mos, 30 mos, 22 mos, 17 mos, and TBD for baby Marilyn.
I just followed the exact method you'll find in my book when you checkout on this page! No potty training was needed, I saved $12k in diapers, total, and I hardly had to change a poopy diaper. Win/win! - How much time, energy, or devotion would I need to put into this?More than half my readers practice this part-time (which can means: only mornings and nights; only on weekends; or every-other-pee).

It is all about communicating with your baby so you can understand when he needs to eliminate (go poop or pee).
It's a two-way street and is led by both the parent and the baby, as a team, until the baby is able to do it himself. The EC'd baby has options other than going potty in his diaper - exposure to the potty from an early age makes transitioning to independence smoother than just popping it on him later.
Potty training is a parent-led process where the child is suddenly told to no longer use the diaper and to use the potty or toilet now. It is like ripping a bandaid off (if done correctly) and involves a set experience and a clear outcome.
Potty training is great for those starting with a toddler over 18 months because toddlers want mastery! But it is very different from EC.
With EC we try to get pees in the potty and are learning, together. It's developmentally appropriate for 0-18 months.
With potty training we get all pees in the potty - the parent leads the training and the child is in charge of doing his business. It's appropriate for 18 months and up. - I've heard early potty training can psychologically harm your baby...?If that were true, then all babies of **all human history** would have been psychologically harmed! Simply not truth. That's a sound bite from the diaper companies to get you to wait for 'readiness' (ie: use diapers longer).
- Do I need any special gear?Nope, you can use a mixing bowl, your bathroom sink, the big toilet, or take baby outdoors.
A top hat potty is highly recommended for newborn-12mos (available at my sister store tinyundies.com) for newborns-12 months old if you can swing it, and a mini potty upon sitting unassisted.
